Does Anyone Know About Learning to Read Braille?
Question by DulceNiña15: Does anyone know about learning to read Braille?
For my Senior Project next year, I’m interested in learning how to read Braille, but I want to take lessons for it, not one of those online programs where you teach yourself. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this? If it doesn’t work out, I’m also interested in volunteering at a drug/alcohol rehab center. Is this possible? Would they accept teen volunteers? Any help is appreciated!

Look in your local phone book. See if there is a school for the blind, or perhaps there is some government or community organization that provides services to the blind. They can probably point you in the right direction. Oh, also look for groups that do things like read books (and record them) for the blind.

Depending on what level of Braille you intend to achieve, you can do it in one hour, on your own (Grade 1or Uncontracted Braille) or in about 6 to 9 months (Grade 2 or Contracted Braille). For Grade 1 Braille, you just need to know which symbols represent the letters of the English alphabet. For Grade 2 or Contracted Braille, you’ll need to take lessons for the rules of contractions.
Schools for the Blind or organisations catering to the visually impaired should offer such courses.
