I Am a Type 1 Diabetic and I Have Two Little Girls. Should I Get Them the Antibody Test?

Question by Steven H: I am a type 1 diabetic and I have two little girls. Should I get them the antibody test?
I am worried that getting them tested, the test if positive will tell me they have a 70% chance of developing diabetes, may impact their future health and life insurance. However, the benefit is that researchers are coming up with better ways to possibly prevent the disease the sooner it is caught.

So my dilema is that they could get better treatment if the results are positive but they may have trouble with insurance. Anyone with health insurance backround please help. Thank you.

Whether you have your children tested really won’t matter since insurers will look at the fact that a parent has diabetes and know the odds of them getting it.

By the way, the test is NOT for “antibodies”, but only tests blood sugar. Diabetes is not caused by a germ that creates antibodies!

I suggest that you follow your physician’s advice about whether and when to have your children tested, and any intermediary things you can do for them now — such as diet things.

Talk to their doctor about it. See what he/ she suggests. Even if we have background in insurance, we have no idea what your coverage is.
