  • common sense says:

they figure that welfare/medicaid aka the hard working class, can support them if they start popping out kids. Also, if their parents are on welfare, then they think it’s ok to sit on their duff and do squat.

That is the first thing the new president should do. If you drop out of school, WE THE TAXPAYERS WON’T be supporting you, even if you do have kids. They need to earn their diploma and work for a living. Nothing wrong with sweeping floors if they think honest labor is beneath them.

I hope my answer will help you..
I suggest that you put yourself in the shoes of high students, try to imagine the causes, which are numerous, and the most prominent one , I think , is the sense of freedom… Most students are more or less restrained at home and deprived of their “rights” and find themselves under family control, sometimes “oppression”, so when they leave the house and family life , they behave as if quickly grown-up and totally responsible of their life..Hence , they feel no more in need for advice or supervision..Besides , they choose whatever they consider satisfying , without knowing that they may fall for “harm” , like bad companies , which lead in turn to failure especially socially ..At this time , they just blame themselves and sometimes revenge because they feel unable to go back to what they were or to how they used to live…

Look up ‘Paul Willis’ he did a study of working class youths in the 80’s.
Mcdonaldization theory might help a bit.
And of course the trend for teen pregnancys.
Marxist theories on limited/bias education system work too.
Also pro-NVQ and other non academic qualification articles will help too.

    High-School Dropouts in the U.S.A. G-11 16 March 2008

High school dropouts negatively affect many parts of society, in the U.S.A they directly affect some vital country issues such as: economy, crime, income and /or education. But why do these kids (aged about 14 to 18, in average) dropout? And how can we help decrease High-School dropout rate? In this essay I shall focalize on these vital points.

Alison Kempner of The News Journal reports that dropouts are a problem in many states; Delaware (state) has had a consistent graduation percentage below the national average. Only six out of 10 Delaware High-School students will graduate by 2010. Furthermore dropouts are more likely to be unemployed, in prison, living in poverty, receiving government assistance, less healthy, divorced or single parents. As I have just proved, young people that don’t complete High-School face many more problems in later life than those who do. While national American leaders have demanded that schools, communities, and families make a major effort to retain students, the dropout rate remains high. A report from the Educational Testing Service, “One-Third of a Nation: Rising Dropout Rates and Declining Opportunities” , warns us that little is being done to reduce the alarmingly growing dropout rates in the States.

The major factors for a student to dropout are (in order of greatest found reason): the lack of personal effort, family / money related issues and finally grades. In response to this some state school are considering lowering their curricula’s level in order for it to be easier for every . Personally I think it is a very bad idea because by doing this school’s not only handicap a majority of kids (who are in the A to C range) but also set a bigger difference in between State facilities and Private ones; and because of this minority State School gradates will have bigger difficulties to be accepted into universities.

Therefore “dummying down” curricula’s will not help… And yet the government is proving to be slow in finding new ways to stop kids from quitting school. In some states congressmen are trying to pass a law making the legal age to quit High-School 18. In my opinion this could be a good idea as students may have a better judgment of things at this age. However from personal experience I think that American should base some of it’s principles on Southwestern/eastern Europeans countries. For example, in France a student is allowed to quit mainstream High-School for technical or professional studies and go for job 2 years later without going to university (the same applies for Germany and Switzerland). Sadly it is very improbable that Americans accept such a way because, according to German Dr in politics: Gene Zimmer, “Americans are a people that would not want to differentiate Children who can handle mainstream to those who can’t (…).” This would explain why American schools seem to offer more challenging courses of study as extra rather than easier ones (AP exams for example…).
In America a bachelor’s degree earns an average of $ 51,554, a high school diploma earns $ 28,645, and a high school dropout earns $ 19,169. As it can be seen here the dropout’s salary is quite low and it is obvious that such a salary cannot support a family of three which is why I Believe that if the American government took steps to educate their students in sexuality and drug abuses as well as the need for minimum level of education they could really reduce the amount of people that quite school. This is bound to work as it has in Germany and France and reduced the number of dropouts from an already low 15% in France to a 13% in 2004 .
Also if some parental involvement such as encouraging, helping or explain was presented to these students in need some students might rethink of quitting much like the user Yahoo! Answers user “J.C.” that rejoined school after quitting for a week. She is a art graduate from Penn State thanks to her parents help.
So finally if parents, schools and governments worked hand in hand they could help in reducing the amount of High School dropouts. This would help to create a better society not only in America but also globally.
