Fear of rejection, humiliation and ridicule, of being caught off guard, not having the same interests or upbringing, feelings of intimidation.

Surely traumatic experiences that occurred in ones childhood would play a role in this too.

There are many reason for social difficulties. First and foremost, social interaction is learnt. Therefore if the model you learned from isn’t a good one, then you as a child, won’t learn properly. Secondly, many neurological disorders such as Austism spectrum have as one of the main symptom social awkwardness. Thirdly, one’s personality can be introverted therefore making it difficult to properly interact socially. Finally, self-esteem is a big factor. Someone who is not secure with who they are and someone who does not think that they have something to bring to a social discussion for example, won’t be comfortable in doing so and will refrain from interacting.
